Before the 1950s, most fabrics. - including denim - were manufactured on shuttle looms. Shuttle looms produce closely woven strips (usually one meter wide) fabric thick. The edges of these fabric strips are finished with closely woven strips which descend on either side which prevent fraying, fraying or curling. Because the banks out of the loom finished denim product on shuttle looms is designated as having a "self edge", hence the name denim "seam".
